High Voltage Capacitors

Maxwell Technologies is proud to announce that our second fully automated production line system for High Voltage capacitors has been in operation since September 2002 in our European facility at Rossens, Switzerland. This system is the only one of its kind in the world.

As a major winding machine and assembly line manufacturer, Maxwell Technologies combined all its technical expertise and development processes to build this fabrication chain which includes:

  • 1 main processor control unit for the full chain
  • 1 high speed winding machine
  • 2 robots for transfer / connection of the windings
  • 2 parallel online test stations (each station performs a capacity & dielectric test on each winding before serial connection)
  • 1 serial connection / housing assembling chain.

This new machine was specially designed to answer our customers' requests for:

  • shorter lead-time
  • increased capacitance (grading and coupling capacitors)
  • double source suppliers (two parallel production lines)
  • top quality of our high voltage capacitors

Thanks to this machine, Maxwell Technologies has increased its capability to manufacture a wider range of capacitors, including capacitors used for Capacitive Voltage Transformer and Power Line Carrier systems.

In addition to our wide selection of grading and coupling capacitors we are introducing new possibilities and products for our customers where higher capacitance are needed (coupling, CVD, PLC, laboratory, etc.). Our customers can benefit from size and volume reduction which should allow them to reduce the supporting structure and reduce their construction costs.

Ultracapacitors, the New Thinking in the Automotive World

Due to the increasing power demand in future vehicles for comfort improvement, as well as ongoing pressures for more environmentally friendly means of transportation, automotive manufacturers are developing alternatives to existing fossil fuel-driven vehicles.

Perhaps the most promising near-term alternative to fuel-cell vehicles, which will not be ready for volume production for at least a decade, is hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technology. While progress has been made in control, engine and motor design, they have not been successful with regard to the electric power storage systems. This is due primarily to the fact that batteries are used to provide the power peaks in most of the currently developed hybrid electric vehicles. But the deficiencies of battery storage systems are multiple and they create many design challenges for automotive engineers.
