Maxwell Technologies Introduces RTSCM Radiation-Tolerant
6U VMEbus SPARC™ Computer Module

Total Dose Tolerance up to 60 krad (Si); Incorporates radiation enhanced
Commercial ICs and a radiation hardened SPARC processor for better
technological performance than specialty space boards

SAN DIEGO, CA — Maxwell Technologies, Inc. announces the availability of the RTSCM, a 32-bit Radiation Tolerant 6U VMEbus SPARC Computer Module with support for speeds up to 20MHz and 2MB of SDRAM with Error Detection and Correction (EDAC). Ideal for space and satellite applications, the RTSCM is designed to operate in severe environments. It sustains a total radiation dose up to 60 krad (Si), depending on orbit, and temperature ranges from -40° C to 60° C. In addition, the RTSCM has a Single Event Upset threshhold of 15 MeV.

"The RTSCM is the first board in Maxwell's series of SPARC-based Single Board Computers (SBCs)," said Paul Friedman. "It utilizes either a single chip or 3-chip SPARC microprocessor and multiple companion chips that are radiation hardened with our patented RAD-PAK® packaging technology. This technology radiation enhances commercial ICs, so designers can take advantage of the sophistication and costs of the RTSCM's supporting chips. This results in a SPARC-based space processor that far exceeds that capabilities of traditional, yet non-commercial, radiation-hardened SPARC space boards."

Features of the RTSCM include 2MB SDRAM with EDAC, a RS-422 serial port and a RTEMS real-time operating system. Options include a 16-channel multiplexer, a dual redundant bus, a 12 bit DAC, and Maxwell's Latchup Protection Technology for additional radiation tolerance. Additional memory is also available, as is VxWorks operating system compatibility. Maxwell sells reliability. We develop, manufacture and market electronic components and systems that perform reliably for the life of the applications into which they are integrated. Our BOOSTCAP® ultracapacitors and ultracapacitor-based energy storage systems uniquely address applications in transportation and consumer and industrial electronics. Our high-voltage grading and coupling capacitors are used in electric utility infrastructure and other applications involving transport, distribution and measurement of high voltage electrical energy. Our radiation-mitigated microelectronic products include power modules, memory modules and single board computers that primarily address applications in aerospace.
