Deployment of satellites into space is always a mission critical and costly expedition.
Guaranteed reliability, performance and radiation mitigation are all a necessity in this environment. If the systems, boards or components cannot withstand the radiation and harsh environment of space, critical data collection could be lost resulting in a high cost of failure to a corporation's bottom-line.
The space community is extremely risk adverse which often results in a compromise of either performance, weight, cost or possibly all of the above. Furthermore, due to the longevity of space programs, a source of supply must be available much beyond what is expected within the commercial electronics industry. Unlike traditional, specialized components, Maxwell's ICs are made with Commercial-Off-The-Shelf die and then packaged in a patented, radiation shielding technology, called RAD-PAK®.
